Dow, S&P 500 declines defy positive breadth numbers

Read Time:45 Second

Although the Big 3 stock market indexes are pulling back Monday, exchange internals suggest the stock market is actually gaining ground. The number of advancing stocks are outnumbering decliners 1,703 to 1,310 on the NYSE and 2,111 to 1,967 on the Nasdaq exchange. Despite this bullish count, the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 62 points, or 0.2%, with 20 of 30 components losing ground, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite slumped 0.7%. The volume data was more mixed, however, with advancing volume on the NYSE making up 51.0% of total volume on that exchange, while the Nasdaq was led by declining volume, which made up 52.3% of total volume.
