Investment Expert Wole Oluyemi Reveals His Top 20 Movies and Documentaries on Money and Investments

Wole Oluyemi is a renowned financial expert that is highly respected for his knowledge and experience in areas such as financial accounting and reporting, financial planning and analysis, strategyand planning, business and market intelligence, and digitalization strategy and delivery.

We caught up with him and as he shared with us his top 20 movies and documentaries on money and investment.

According to him, “I am not that into movies, but I can still remember some movies and documentaries that teach about different aspects of money and money management. In no particular order, I can still remember the Tinder Swindler (that’s the most recent), Quam’s Money

(comedy by Falz from Nigeria), The Accountant, The Wolf on Wall Street, Too Big to Fail, Ivory Tower, Moneyball, The Company Men, Inside Job, Laundromat, Billionaire Boys Club, Other People’s Money, Freakonomics, the Money Pit, In Pursuit of Happiness, Working Girl, Slumdog Millionaire, Living on One Dollar, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Enron – The Smartest Guy in the Room, Minimalism – Documentary on Important Things, and Indecent Proposal.”

Here’s a breakdown of it all:

Tinder Swindler: This is a 2022 British true crime documentary film that tells the story of a group of women who were victims of a dating app based swindler who came together in an attempt to hunt him down and recover millions of dollars he stole from them.

Quam’s Money (comedy by Falz from Nigeria): Quam’s Money is the story of a security-guard

turned millionaire, a character played by singer Folarin Falarin (Falz). It explores the adventures of ‘Quam’ played by Falz, as he tries to navigate the new experience his new status has given him. It was released in 2020, It is a comedy film written by Chinaza Onuzo and directed by Kayode Kasum. It is a sequel to the 2018 film New Money. 

The Accountant: The Accountant is a 2016 American action-thriller. The movie tells the story of

Christian Wolff, who makes his living offering his services as a freelance accountant to dangerous criminal organizations while using a local office as cover. When treasury agents get on his trail, he decides to take on a robotics company, but as he gets deeper into the transaction, the odds begin to pipe up.

The Wolf of Wall Street: Based on a memoir written by a man named Jordan Belfort, the film is said to be based on true events.The movie tells the story of Jordan Belfort who was introduced to the fast lane through stock-broking but who takes a hit after a Wall Street crash. 

Too Big to Fail: This is the story of Henry Paulson, the secretary of the Treasury, who, after

leaving his top job at Goldman Sachs, tries to tackle problems that arose during the global economic meltdown.

Ivory Tower: Ivory Tower is a documentary that takes a look at the issue of the cost of education as tuition spirals upward and student debt skyrockets.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game: This movie is based on a book by Michael Lewis which was published in 2003 and focuses on the Oakland Athletics baseball team

and its general manager, Billy Beane. It takes a look at the team’s analytical, and evidence-based approach to assembling a baseball team despite the outfit’s small budget.

The Company Men: This movie revolves around Bobby and his colleagues who lost their jobs when GTX Corporation downsized due to the recession. It shows their struggle to reclaim

their esteem and find direction for their lives. The movie is a 2010 American drama film written and produced by John Wells.

Inside Job: A documentary focused on explaining what led to the 2008 global financial

meltdown. Matt Damon narrates and examines the elements that influenced it as well as the role key financial and political players played in the collapse.

Laundromat: This is a drama/comedy drama centered around a widow, Ellen Martin, who begins an investigation after her vacation takes an unexpected turn. This leads her to two cunning lawyers in Panama.

Billionaire Boys Club: This is a crime/drama film which is based on the true story of a group of wealthy boys from LA who founded a get rich scheme that ends up catastrophically.

Other People’s Money: This is a 1991 comedy/drama film about a corporate raider that threatened to take over a publicly traded company.

Freakonomics: The movie is a 2010 documentary film based on the 2005 book written by an economist Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dinner.

The Money Pit: The Money Pit is a romance comedy film about a couple who use their life savings to buy a dilapidated house, which ends up giving them a lot of issues.

In Pursuit of Happiness: In Pursuit of Happiness tells the story of the struggle of a homeless salesman, played by Will Smith. It is a 2006 American drama film based on a book by Gardner with the same title.

Slumdog Millionaire: Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a young boy from Mumbai who entered the contest ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati?’ but is accused of cheating. He revisits his past to get all the answers he needs.

Living on One Dollar: This 2013 documentary/drama tells the story of four friends who battle with illness and hunger as they experiment what it means to live on a dollar for eight weeks.

Confessions of a Shopaholic: This is a comedy/romance movie about a character named Rebecca Bloomwood, who is addicted to shopping and accepts a job as a finance columnist in a bid to pay off a huge debt. In the midst of the struggle, she finds herself entangled in romance with a wealthy entrepreneur.

Enron – The Smartest Guys in the Room: This is a documentary that analyses the fall of

the Enron Corporation. It’s an interesting look into what goes on in some large corporations.

Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things: Just as the title suggests, this is a

documentary that examines levels of minimalism as it takes a look at the lives of individuals who are minimalists from across the world.

Indecent Proposal: This 1993 romance and drama film tells the story of a couple hit by the recession who come across John Gage, a millionaire in Las Vegas who makes a proposal that looks juicy but has the potential to ruin their relationship.
