Coronavirus tally: New daily U.S. cases holds above 30,000, with some states seeing cases rise more than 20%

Concerns over COVID-19 are resurfacing, with new lockdowns in China amid a surge in coronavirus cases and as several U.S. states have seen cases rise given the emergence of the BA.2 subvariant. In the U.S., the seven-day average of new cases held steady just above 30,000 for the fifth straight day. The daily average was at 30,120 on Sunday, according to a New York Times tracker, down from 30,174 on Saturday and down 12% from two weeks ago, but new cases increased by more than 20% in New York, Connecticut and Arkansas. Meanwhile, hospitalizations and deaths continued to fall, with hospitalizations of 18,396 on Sunday was down 36% from two weeks ago at the lowest number since July 9, 2021 and deaths of 793 were down 39% from two weeks ago and the fewest since Aug. 17. On a global basis, total cases rose to 480.96 million and total deaths reached 6,124,021, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, with the U.S. still leading the way with 79.95 million cases and 976,704 deaths.
